Some of the things to see, places to eat and local foods within a 4 mile radius of Fenton Hill

The mounds of Fenton Hill Camp which is the oldest settlement in the parish of Doddington can be seen in a field close to our Northumberland self-catering cottages. An archaeological excavation of the camp showed that it began as a simple farmstead enclosed by a palisade in the late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. It was later enclosed by ramparts, becoming a typical small hill fort with many circular huts inside.

At Roughting Linn which is a 2 mile walk from our Northumberland cottages there are also the remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort and a large rock nearby has about 60 cup and ring markings on it. There are a great variety of carvings which makes it one of the best known rocks in Northern England. The motifs include cups and grooves and some unusual designs such as flower like shapes.  Roughting Linn also has a small waterfall which was a firm favourite with our own children as they were growing up. It is quite a steep path through woodland down to the waterfall which can be spectacular in low sunlight when a rainbow forms or in extremely cold weather we’ve seen icicles hanging from the rocks. The nearby woodland has a carpet of bluebells in late spring. The panoramic views from nearby Goats Crag are well worth the walk and this leads to Ford Moss which is a designated special area of conservation.

The Fenton Centre which is less than two miles from our Northumberland cottages is an Agricultural, Ecological and Environmental visitor centre with an outdoor play area and coffee shop with delicious home made cakes and affordable meals and snacks making it an ideal place to stop for lunch when out walking nearby. www.fentoncentre.com They also serve excellent Sunday Lunches using good local Northumbrian produce. Ford and Etal Estate is the neighbouring estate 3 miles from our Northumberland self-catering cottage accommodation. Ford and Etal have many small attractions including Heatherslaw Light railway, Cornmill and Tearoom. The Maelimin Heritage trail near Milfield is 3 miles away from our cottages in Northumberland. It is located on the old wartime airfield which had a surprising history and has a trail with information boards, reconstruction of local archaeological finds including a Henge, Mesolithic hut and a Dark Age house. www.maelmin.org.uk

Milfield Country Café and store is a café style restaurant which is open all day, they have an extensive menu including hearty traditional breakfasts, and home baked cakes and Sunday lunches. The Red Lion in Milfied is an 18th century coaching Inn which serves freshly prepared local food with an ever-changing seasonal menu and award winning ales. Harveys Restaurant is a very nice family run licensed restaurant at Akeld Manor between Wooler and Milfield which is 15 minutes from our Northumberland cottages with a beer garden and patio serving good locally sourced home cooked food. www.harveys-restaurant.com There are a number of other country pubs within 5 mile radius at Lowick, Etal, and Chatton.
