Bird watching- Northumberland is one of the UK’s richest regions for birds. The wealth of birds is largely due to the diverse habitat. In spring the summer migrants come to breed and the birdsong in woodlands near the farm is wonderful. Summer is best known for our breeding seabird colonies on the Farne Islands (boat from Seahouses which is a 30 minute drive) where Puffins and Arctic Terns can be seen in large numbers. Autumn is the time of migration where flocks are commonly seen on the mud flats at Lindisfarne (20 minute drive). Winter is the time when beautiful wildfowl like the Long-tailed duck can be seen clustering off Bamburgh beach. Beside each of our Northumberland cottages is a bird feeder which will contain seed and nuts for your arrival. There are many, many birds on or near the farm including woodpeckers, tree sparrows, finches, thrushes, wrens, robins, buzzards, pheasant, partridge and of course our barn owls which can be seen hunting near the cottages on light evenings. St.Abbs Head nature reserve with many nesting sea birds is a 40minute drive.
